At a recent Alamo Heights ISD District Educational Advisory Committee meeting, staff presented the district's annual wellness plan, said budget cuts will change lunch supervision at elementary campuses next year, and announced new snack items and a short NutriSlice how‑to video for parents.
Dr. Walker, a district staff member, explained the wellness plan is required by state law and sets district goals in four areas: nutrition promotion, nutrition education, coordinated health and physical education, and staff wellness. "Each campus principal is responsible for implementing those goals," she said, and the district staff member who presented the plan reminded committee members that she must also share the report with trustees.
Snack line changes and parent tools Efrain (cafeteria staff) and Chef Frank reported the district worked with suppliers to add protein and healthier a la carte options at Cambridge, Woodridge and the Junior School after an earlier discussion on snack lines. New items added include beef jerky, yogurt, string cheese and cheese cubes, vegetable cups and fruit cups; Chef Frank said some items started at higher sales and later settled into averages of a few items per day at each campus.
The district also produced a short video showing parents how to review snack offerings and nutrition information on NutriSlice and how to set purchase restrictions through SchoolCafe. The video directs parents to ahisd.nutrislice.com to view items and to schoolcafe.com/alamoheightsisd to set purchase restrictions. The presentation noted parents must log into their SchoolCafe account to set limits on frequency or days their child may buy a la carte snacks and that dietary restrictions should be documented with the school nurse so cafeteria staff are informed.
Lunch supervision and next steps Dr. Walker told the committee that the district has used part‑time lunchtime monitors at elementary campuses for several years but that next year, "because of budget cuts, we're not gonna have outside monitors to do that." She said principals are working on plans to use existing staff to provide necessary supervision so students can sit and eat in a safe environment. A committee member asked about partnering with PTOs to help with lunch supervision; Dr. Walker said principals were considering options but had not finalized a plan.
Distribution and implementation Dr. Walker said she will ask principals to share the NutriSlice how‑to video and related information with families, and committee members encouraged distributing it both at the end of the year and again at the start of next year. No formal vote was taken; these were informational items and next steps for staff and principals.
The wellness plan document reviewed at the meeting will be shared with trustees as required. Committee members were invited to contact their principals or the district with follow‑up questions.
