School resource officer seeks district approval to solicit donated golf cart/UTV for campus use

A school resource officer asked the Blaine County School District Board on April 8 for permission to pursue a donated golf cart or utility task vehicle (UTV) for use at Wood River High School and other district sites.

The officer said the vehicle would help reach playgrounds, fields and other areas faster during the school day and be useful at athletic events and emergency responses. The officer described prior experience using similar vehicles as a school resource officer elsewhere and said a golf cart would allow quicker campus patrols and a positive presence with students.

Trustees and staff raised operational questions: whether the vehicle should be gas or electric, where it would be parked and stored, who would maintain and insure it, whether non‑district employees would be allowed to solicit donations, and who would be authorized drivers. The officer said a battery‑electric model was preferred for charging convenience and lower maintenance. He said if donated equipment needed modifications (lift, tires, decals) additional funding would be required.

Board members recommended coordinating requests with transportation and athletics staff so the district can plan storage, maintenance, and consistent rules for use and operator qualifications. Trustee comments asked transportation and facilities to estimate insurance and maintenance costs, and to consider consolidating fleet needs so the district does not accumulate multiple uncoordinated carts.

The request was presented on the information agenda and will return to the board after staff follow‑up. No vote was taken.
