The Batavia USD 101 Board of Education voted to approve multiple personnel actions and move into closed session during a short special meeting.
The board approved a personnel report that listed resignations, retirements and new hires; passed a resolution placing certain part‑time or one‑year contract employees on an "honorable dismissal" list required by state rules; and authorized notices of nonrenewal for probationary (non‑tenured) teachers. After those votes, the board moved into closed session under the Illinois Open Meetings Act.
Steve, a district staff member who presented the items, described the personnel report as "just like a normal personnel report" and asked the board to "approve that as presented." He said the list of staff in the honorable dismissal resolution mainly includes part‑time, midyear hires and one‑year contract employees, and that the district commonly rehires some of those people when openings later arise. "Oftentimes we hire many of those staff back, particularly staff ... who have a one‑year contract and then they've done very well," Steve said.
The board voted by roll call to approve each item. The personnel report (agenda item 4.1) passed on a motion moved by Raquel and seconded by Sue; the roll call included recorded "yes" votes for Arlando, Gonzales Thomas, Meadows, Slager, Mathis and Locke. The honorable dismissal resolution (agenda item 4.2) was moved by Raquel and seconded by Rob and passed on a roll call that recorded "yes" votes for Mathis, Slager, (Block), Meadows, Gonzalez Thomas and Arlando. The resolution authorizing notices of nonrenewal to probationary teachers (agenda item 4.3) was moved by Slager and seconded by Sue and passed on a roll call with recorded "yes" votes for Gonzales Thomas, Arlando, Meadows, Slager, Mathis and (Lot). The board then voted to move into closed session, citing the Illinois Open Meetings Act for the purposes of sections 2(c)(1) and 2(c)(2).
No public comments were submitted prior to the meeting, and the meeting proceeded directly to the listed personnel actions. Presenters told the board the honorable dismissal list is required by state rules and that some individuals on the list — often part‑time or temporary hires — may later be rehired when positions reopen.
After completing the votes, the board convened into closed session; the motion was seconded and carried on a roll call vote. The board did not announce further action publicly before adjourning to closed session.
The actions affect teachers and other district employees listed in the personnel report and the honorable dismissal and nonrenewal resolutions; no dollar amounts or additional implementation details were provided during the public portion of the meeting.
