Subcommittee reports PGCPS conducts three-year accessibility reviews; questions compiled for facilities staff

The Disability Issues Advisory Board—s new school construction and accessibility subcommittee reported on April 8 that Prince George's County Public Schools conducts an accessibility review for every school approximately every three years. DIAB member and subcommittee lead Ms. Bowman said physical therapists in the Department of Special Education perform those reviews and record results to a district data dashboard.
The review covers building features including ramps, working elevators, cafeterias, stages and bathrooms, plus exterior elements such as sidewalks, playground access and athletic-field access points. Ms. Bowman noted many county schools predate the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990) and that the district uses the rolling accessibility database to prioritize renovations and minor fixes.
The subcommittee compiled questions from members about building accessibility and is gathering responses from relevant offices; Ms. Bowman said she will reach out to subject-matter staff and that the subcommittee—s next meeting is tentatively scheduled for April 28 at 5:30 p.m. A community member attending the meeting said she inspected one local high school and reported a new sidewalk but noted bleacher access remained inadequate; Ms. Bowman asked for the school name by email so building services can follow up.
