Committee approves student-led MedConnect partnership to provide tech and health mini-sessions for seniors

The Miami Lakes Elderly Affairs Committee approved a partnership with a group of first‑year medical students who proposed “MedConnect,” a volunteer program offering 15–30 minute sessions for seniors on technology, telehealth portals and basic health topics.
Student presenters identified themselves as FAU/FIU medical students; Andres Wong introduced the group. “What we did was we created this project called MedConnect in which we're looking to serve the community of the elderly and the seniors,” Wong said. The students asked the committee to let them schedule sessions that could include short instructional talks followed by small-group, hands-on assistance.
Committee members generally supported the proposal but asked for greater specificity before each session. Members asked the students to provide proposed dates and topics in advance (for example, one month or three months ahead) so committee staff and town officials can confirm logistics and any approvals. One member recommended using the town chambers for initial sessions because the library and Roberto Alonso location lack reliable AV and the chambers allow controlled, smaller groups and PowerPoint use.
A motion to allow the student group to set up a partnership with the committee passed; members said the program should return with a schedule and subject list ahead of each session so staff can confirm permits, setup and staffing.
The committee emphasized the sessions should be hands-on and tailored to small groups (students would break into smaller teams for personalized help). The approved arrangement is a volunteer partnership; no direct funding was allocated during the vote.
