Winslow board limits field-renaming nominations to three, sets 30-day window for community input

Board members on April 9 heard a proposal to close nominations for renaming the Winslow Township School District athletic field after three names were submitted and then voted to close nominations 30 days from the meeting.

Dr. Poteet read letters the district had received nominating Dennis Mitchell, Russell Bates and Shanika Brown. Board Member Michael Clark moved to close nominations to those three names so the district could begin discussion; Clark’s motion was seconded by Bridal. Some members objected that closing the list immediately would exclude other community suggestions and proposed an amendment to extend the deadline 30 days so additional nominations could be filed. After amendment and discussion, the board voted by roll call to close nominations effective roughly May 8.

Board members who opposed an immediate cutoff said they wanted to make sure the wider community had time to propose alternatives such as a non-person name (for example, “Edgewood Legacy Sports Complex”) that would honor multiple legacies instead of singling out an individual. Supporters of the closure said the nomination period had been open since the prior fall and that the motion was intended to preserve the formal process and allow the board to begin structured conversations.

The motion to close nominations does not itself select a new name. Board members said the 30-day window will be used for outreach and deliberation; further action to choose a name will appear on a future agenda.

Ending The board asked staff to continue soliciting input during the 30-day period and to return the item for deliberation at an upcoming meeting.
