Fremont County finance staff told departments to prepare budget submissions that include a baseline 10% reduction as part of efforts to close a projected shortfall.
Julie (county staff) summarized the guidance during the commission meeting: "Everyone is every budget is required to have a 10% cut in it," she said, and warned that departments that have negotiated alternative targets with commissioners must document those exceptions. The county asked departments to deliver final budgets by April 30 for hearings beginning May 6.
Julie said officials will reconcile requested reductions, known open positions and potential revenue adjustments (including proposed user fees) before finalizing the recommended county budget. She also flagged several items that affect the county's employee cost estimates, including updated workers' compensation classifications and law‑enforcement retirement contribution changes being phased in by the Wyoming retirement system.
Commissioners and staff said the goal is to assemble a single, transparent package showing proposed cuts, revenue offsets and reserve use so the board can decide how to balance the FY budget. Staff will return with a consolidated recommendation and an itemized list of positions and line items subject to further review.
