Golden Bridge replacement north of Leroy moves forward; contractor driving 50-foot piles

Jerry Stokes of the county highway department provided a project update on the Golden Bridge replacement, located roughly two miles north of Leroy. Stokes said crews began work on April 24 (recorded in meeting notes as "the 20 fourth"), removing the north half of the old bridge to provide crane access for abutment pile installation.
Stokes showed photographs from site and described excavation and pile driving activity. He said crews are driving about 50-foot piles for abutments, marked and counted by blows per two-foot increments to reach required bearing; five abutment piles for the north side were in place and would be cut to length. The contractor planned to finish pile work on the north side and then begin driving piles on the south side by the end of the following week.
Stokes told the committee that pile-driving completion is a major step forward for the project and invited questions; none were raised during the report.
