Recreation committee reports pickleball expansion, tournaments, DAC programs and new gymnasium timeline
Summary
The Recreation Committee reported plans for eight new pickleball courts at the Soccerplex, Farmers Market construction, youth sports participation increases, several summer tournaments including a USSA state softball tournament (June 16–21), and an anticipated new gymnasium opening this summer at the Dyersburg Activity Center.
Chairman Ricky Hammond told the board the Recreation Committee met April 3 and received updates from department directors on current projects, youth sports, and facility work.
Hammond reported plans to add eight pickleball courts at the Soccerplex and noted construction at the Farmers Market. Patrick Holden at the Dyersburg Activity Center distributed information on upcoming DAC activities; the committee heard about youth basketball, soccer, softball and swim programs.
Committee figures presented by Hammond included:
- Youth basketball (2024–25): 28 teams; season gate concessions $14,500 over nine Saturdays.
- Youth soccer (spring 2025): 340 players across 30 teams.
- Softball (spring 2025): 125 players across 12 teams; games to start in April and run three nights per week for five weeks; church softball league begins in May.
- Field rental fee: $8.50 per field (concession stand provided by the activity center when fields are rented).
- Okina Poole summer program (ages 3–12): six-week session beginning June; projected revenue $7,260.
- Summer swim programs: 235 swimmers in summer 2024; 48 registered for aqua aerobics in preliminary summer 2025 signups.
Hammond also reported the city has secured 12 sponsors at $500 each for a travel softball tournament and expects roughly 45 teams (up to 500 players) for a USSA state softball tournament scheduled June 16–21. Committee members said the new DAC gymnasium is scheduled to be completed sometime this summer. Victor Macklin (youth baseball) thanked the committee for a new oven and installation of air conditioning in facilities.
The Recreation Committee meeting adjourned with no action items requiring board approval at the April 7 meeting; the board accepted the Recreation Committee minutes without further discussion.
