The Fort Lauderdale Board of Adjustment voted unanimously to approve variances for a carport at 1739 Northeast 18th Avenue, an after-the-fact request brought after city staff identified the structure lacked a permit.
The approval allows the carport, installed about 12 to 13 years ago, to remain despite front-yard setback encroachment under the Unified Land Development Regulations, the board said at the hearing.
Andrew Schein, representing the property owner, described the carport as professionally installed and said the owner, Chuck Farrell, sought to protect vehicles from sun and heat. Schein told the board the property had “a very large area between the street and the property line” and that “the carport was installed, approximately 12 or 13 years ago.” He added the applicant had collected neighborhood support: “we have 26 letters of support” from neighbors, which Schein offered to submit into the record.
Board members asked questions and, after closing the public hearing, Jason moved to approve the variances under ULDR Section 47-5.31, saying the application met the hardship criteria; the motion passed on a roll-call vote with all members voting yes. No members of the public opposed at the hearing.
Staff noted the application arose from a code case generated when a new code-enforcement officer discovered the lack of permit. The board’s approval regularizes the carport’s legal status but did not discuss any required modifications. The board closed the case and moved on to other agenda business.
