Seminole County's Board of County Commissioners voted 4'1 on April 8 to end community water fluoridation for the county's utility service area, following a utilities briefing, extensive public comment and discussion among commissioners.
Utilities Director Johnny Edwards told the board the presentation was an update on community water fluoridation and framed the county's role as a water system operator rather than a public-health standards setter. "What we do not do, this county does not generate, toxicity reports, health studies. We do not establish the drinking water quality standards, or health advisory levels," Edwards said. He summarized recent federal and state developments that had prompted renewed local debate, including a 2023 National Toxicology Program review and a federal court ruling that directed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to reassess fluoride's risks.
