Brookside first graders perform folktale Reader’s Theatre; board praises interdisciplinary project

Brookside Elementary first graders presented a Reader’s Theatre performance of a folktale titled Too Much Noise at the Yorktown Central School District Board meeting on April 7. The presentation, introduced by Brookside Principal Joe Casarini, combined reading, masks, music and movement to reinforce literacy skills and interdisciplinary learning.
ELL and first-grade teacher Mrs. Ames said the project ‘‘heightens the entire learning experience’’ by integrating music, drama and STEAM with reading instruction. Students enacted the story about a family that brings animals into a noisy house and learns to be thankful; the class identified the moral as ‘‘It can always be worse.’’
Principal Joe Casarini and teachers credited library media specialist Mrs. Breen, music director Mrs. Berger and art teacher Mrs. Boards with supporting the project. Board members responded with praise: one board member called it ‘‘Broadway in the making’’ and others commended students’ confidence and the creative masks.
Superintendent Dr. Ron Hatter thanked students and families, called students ‘‘absolutely treasures’’ and said the night demonstrated the district’s partnership with families and staff. The board took a brief recess to allow families to exit following the presentation.
