Lincoln — Dawes Middle School sixth‑grade teacher Amy Kinnett received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, and the Lincoln Board of Education formally congratulated her at its April 8 meeting.
The proclamation cited Kinnett’s work teaching math, her emphasis on growth mindset and student motivation, and her influence on colleagues. Board President Dr. Bob Browner and Superintendent Dr. John Scribe signed a resolution congratulating Kinnett on the national award from the National Science Foundation and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
Kinnett told the board she was nominated for the award in December 2021 by Deb Rumnick, a math specialist with the Nebraska Department of Education, and that she began teaching in Lincoln Public Schools in February 2007. "I have taught for Lincoln public schools since 02/2007 and I've always felt very lucky to work for a school district that prioritizes professional learning," Kinnett said. She thanked district instructional coaches and colleagues and acknowledged guests in the audience, including family and school administrators.
Board members offered congratulations and personal remarks. The board approved the proclamation as part of the meeting’s special reports and celebrations of success.
