The Coon Rapids City Council on March 18 adopted an updated Active Transportation Plan intended to guide sidewalk, trail and bicycle improvements and strengthen the city's competitiveness for state funding.
Staff said the existing sidewalk and trail plan was outdated and that a current policy framework improves the city’s success when applying for grants such as MnDOT’s Safe Routes to School program. The plan was produced with consultant assistance, included online engagement with residents and partnership input from the county and the school district. Staff said a draft was completed late last year, the council reviewed the draft at a January work session and staff incorporated council feedback into a revised document distributed to the council weeks before the vote.
Staff described the plan as a policy framework to prioritize projects and support grant applications. Council member Andrew Geisler commended staff for including input and noted new state funding opportunities. Council member Butler cited neighborhood feedback related to a bike demonstration near Sand Creek Elementary School and encouraged residents to review the plan. The staff noted the plan length as 113 pages.
Council member Carlson moved to adopt the plan; Geisler seconded. The motion carried unanimously.
