Coon Rapids proclaims April Earth Month, honors three sustainability award winners

The Coon Rapids City Council on April 1 proclaimed April 2025 as Earth Month and heard the Sustainability Commission present three Earth Month sustainability awards.
The proclamation, read by Mayor Jerry Cook, recognizes the commission’s work since 2009 and the city’s commitment to environmental responsibility. “I, Jerry Cook, mayor of the city of Coon Rapids, on behalf of the Coon Rapids City Council, hereby proclaim the month of April 2025 to be Earth Month in the city of Coon Rapids,” Cook said.
The Sustainability Commission then presented awards in three categories. The commission recognized Eric Nelson, a resident, for installing solar panels on his home for eight years, maintaining a pollinator-friendly garden and practicing composting and repair to reduce waste. A local business, identified in the packet as Mary T Incorporated, received an award for its annual Earth Day trash pickup, adding organics recycling, removing buckthorn from its property, installing a rain garden and participating in an energy audit with the Minnesota Chamber. Anoka-Ramsey Community College received an institutional award for installing a bee lawn and prairie garden, a solar wall on the Science Building, electric vehicle chargers and hosting a sustainability book club.
The commission also announced weekly Earth Month communications and invited residents to a park cleanup at Lions Coon Creek Park on Saturday, April 19 at 10 a.m.
The presentations were ceremonial and no formal council action was required or recorded for the proclamations and awards.
Council members thanked the Sustainability Commission and the award winners during the meeting.
