Town transportation and public-safety staff told the Select Board on April 9 that the 2 Fairgrounds Road parking lot will reopen to the public on April 15 after interim use and site reclamation work. Staff said the lot’s internal traffic flow will be reconfigured and the reclaimed portion of the lot will be fenced to comply with a MEPA impervious-surface requirement.
Why it matters: the lot has been closed since November for staging multiple projects and has been used informally by long-term parked commercial vehicles and trailers; reopening the lot changes where some seasonal parkers will leave vehicles and introduces new rules and enforcement.
What staff said Transportation Program Manager Mike Burns and project manager Kevin Manuel said DPW is installing improvements that should improve vehicle flow and safety and will post signage. Chief Casper and public-safety staff said enforcement will focus on the 96-hour parking limit, an existing restriction on oversized commercial vehicles and prohibiting trailers and long-term storage. The town will not begin pay-lot enforcement immediately; a vendor procurement for pay-parking remains in process.
Capacity and next steps Staff estimated roughly 200–210 passenger-vehicle spaces on the gravel lot as currently measured (approximate because the lot lacks striping). They said a design consultant is surveying the lot and three other municipal lots and will make long-term recommendations on configuration, lighting, safety and signage. Officials committed to community outreach if lighting or other features are proposed that could affect neighbors.
Ending note Town staff said they will publicize the April 15 reopening and urged drivers to obey posted rules; they also said further meetings will be scheduled if the town moves to implement permanent changes to layout, lighting or long-term use.
