Edinburg CISD honors students, coaches and volunteers across athletics, academics and the arts

Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District trustees used part of their April meeting to recognize dozens of students, staff and community partners for academic, athletic and extracurricular accomplishments across the district.
United Way officials presented a Golden Apple Award to Edinburg CISD for having one of the top district campaigns in Hidalgo and Starr counties. “Edinburgh CISD has received this award thanks to 812 Edinburgh CISD employees that contributed over a hundred and $3,000 in 2024 to support local United Way programs,” Kimberly Davis, a United Way of South Texas board member, told trustees.
The board also recognized Coach Oscar Salinas after the city presented a proclamation in March honoring his career as a coach and athletic director. Jose Salinas, speaking at the meeting, thanked the board and said it was “a humbling honor” to return to serve ECISD as athletic director.
Several teams and coaches were honored for season accomplishments: Lady Cougar varsity soccer (by coach Watson), Lady Jaguars (district champions) and the boys varsity team that finished 22–3–1 and advanced to the regional semifinals (coach Rodriguez). Multiple powerlifting teams from the district’s high schools reported regional qualifiers and state qualifiers across both boys and girls divisions; coaches named individual qualifiers and medalists.
Robotics sponsors and students also received recognition: district novice and junior winners in an online coding competition, sumo‑bot champions and three students who will advance to the Texas Alliance for Minority Engineering (TAME) state competition at Rice University on May 17 (the district said the trip will be all‑expenses paid for qualifying students and possibly sponsors). The South Middle School band program was honored as a Rio Grande Valley Band Program of Distinction, and Edinburgh High School’s cheer program was recognized for national championships.
Academic accomplishments acknowledged included district spelling‑bee winners and regional champions who will advance to national competition and multiple winners at the Texas Youth Creator Awards (state placements across photography, multimedia, graphic design and other categories).
Ending: Board members and the superintendent applauded students, coaches, sponsors and families. No formal votes accompanied the recognitions; they were ceremonial acknowledgements recorded in the meeting minutes.
