Laredo drug-and-alcohol commission plans outreach events, school presentations and reviews member attendance rules

The Loretta Webb County Drug and Alcohol Commission spent part of its lunch meeting reviewing planned awareness campaigns and community outreach, discussing how to engage schools and new paramedics, and reminding members of attendance and training rules that can affect commission appointments.
Chair and staff asked agencies to share event materials and to RSVP for upcoming awareness campaigns, including Alcohol Awareness Month and an April 14–17 multiagency outreach effort. A speaker encouraged partner agencies to reserve booths and share promotional materials to reach families at community events.
Commission members described outreach already under way: school presentations (including a May 1 presentation scheduled at Martin High School), offers to bring naloxone education to middle and high schools where district policy permits, and plans to coordinate a presentation for an EMS academy that will graduate about 38 paramedics in July so new responders know local services.
The commission reviewed attendance and training requirements conveyed by city staff: commission members who miss more than the allowable number of meetings may forfeit their appointment, and the city requires a recorded training (a video) be reviewed by commission members. Staff asked members to RSVP to meetings so food counts and quorum planning are accurate. Members discussed whether to propose changing meeting cadence if local overdose trends remain low.
Staff reported a recent appointment: Ivaro Diz was named a representative for District 6 by Dr. Tyler King (appointment announced earlier in the week). The commission also discussed vacant seats and encouraged stakeholders who attend regularly to consider formal appointment.
Meeting logistics and upcoming dates were confirmed: staff asked attendees to send materials for coordinated social-media posts, and the commission said it will meet next on May 14. The minutes for 01/08/2025 were approved with a correction to the year; adjournment was moved and seconded and the meeting ended at 12:34 p.m.
