The Pittsylvania County School Board voted to appoint Steve Mayhew as superintendent of Pittsylvania County Public Schools, effective July 1, 2025, and accepted the employment contract the board reviewed in closed session.
Board members announced Mayhew as the board’s finalist after what the board described as a “thorough review process” that included a public survey and interviews. The board said it received more than 1,000 responses to a community survey that helped shape candidate criteria and selection.
Mayhew has worked for the school division for 24 years, the board said, serving as a biology and chemistry teacher, elementary and high school principal, and assistant superintendent of administration. The board highlighted Mayhew’s academic credentials — a Bachelor of Science from Radford University, a Master of Science in education administration from Longwood University, and an educational specialist degree from Liberty University — and said he is completing a doctorate in educational leadership at Liberty University.
“I won’t take a lot of time. We got a lot of folks we wanna recognize. I just wanna tell you just say thank you to the board … and I’m looking forward to working with the board and making the Penn County continue with the progress that we have,” Steve Mayhew said after the announcement. The board then moved to formalize the appointment.
The motion to appoint Mayhew passed by roll call; all members present voted in favor. The board subsequently voted to accept the contract as presented in the closed session; that motion also passed by roll call with all members present voting yes.
Dr. Jones, who announced earlier that he would retire in June, was acknowledged by the board during the announcement as the superintendent stepping down this summer. The board thanked him for his leadership during the search process and for his service to the division.
Mayhew’s official start date is July 1, 2025. The board said it looks forward to working with him to continue division initiatives and support student learning.
