Greenbelt forms technical advisory committee, begins mapping and reevaluation of goals

The Greenbelt Advisory Board (GAB) on March 14 was told staff has formed a technical advisory committee to begin mapping and reevaluating the program's goals.
Eric (last name not specified), director of the newly reorganized Housing Development and Land Management department, said the advisory committee held a kickoff meeting March 14 and that County GIS staff will combine partner datasets into mapping layers. "We have formed a technical advisory committee. We had our kickoff meeting that took place on March 14," Eric said.
The committee includes land-trust partners, Charleston County resiliency and sustainability staff, County GIS staff, the Council of Governments and all three major municipalities; the East Coast Greenway Alliance has since agreed to participate, staff said. Staff said partners are sharing datasets into a shared folder while the committee evaluates mapping opportunities and the geodatabase structure.
Staff also listed several related planning efforts that will feed into the Greenbelt analysis, including an updated Charleston County open-space analysis, a Council of Governments walk/bike plan update and custom green-infrastructure work by the Forestry Commission. Eric said once the mapping and analysis are consolidated staff will reconvene the committee and then present results to the GAB.
Board members asked about timing; Eric said the reevaluation will continue over the next year and that additional data from partner work will be incorporated as it becomes available. The board will receive periodic updates and a fuller strategy discussion when mapping and analysis are further along.
The discussion was informational; no formal action was taken.
