Council approves pay adjustment for senior automotive mechanic, makes change retroactive

Newark City Council on April 7 approved Ordinance 24‑39, amending the pay range and department authorization tables for the senior automotive mechanic/equipment operator position in the Department of Public Service, Division of Street Maintenance.
The ordinance, which was taken off the table at the start of the meeting, passed by a 9–0 roll call. Council member Marmey moved to take the ordinance off the table; the motion was seconded. Council member Barker asked colleagues to support the ordinance at final vote, saying, "I would just ask everyone to support this ordinance when we vote on it." Amy, the clerk, read the ordinance before the council voted.
The personnel committee had amended the proposal to specify that the license-pay adjustment applies only to this specific position within the Street Department and to record that the classification had been omitted during prior contract negotiations. Council members said the amendment also included a commitment that the issue will be handled in upcoming union renegotiations. The amendment, and the ordinance as amended, were approved unanimously. Council recorded that the retroactive pay will take effect Jan. 1 of this year.
Council members and staff acknowledged help from the law director, the service director and Buster Prince, the head of streets, in drafting the amendment and final ordinance language.
The passage changes the department table and sets compensation for the reclassified position; further implementation steps were not detailed in the meeting record.
The ordinance was sponsored by Council members Barker, Cost, Labutis and Rapp and will be placed into the city’s personnel and payroll records as amended.
