Superintendent announces three new principals, summer meal sites and Fit Fi planning

Superintendent Doctor Jenny Gatto used her April 8 report to introduce three newly selected principals, outline the district’s summer food and program plans, and update the board on long-range facilities planning.
Gatto named the three principals the board will add to school leadership this year: Maureen Bangsund as principal of Westminster High School, Stephanie Fick as principal of Fairview PK–8, and Doug Krasowski as principal of Mesa Elementary School. Gatto said another principalship will be announced at the next meeting. “We strongly believe in developing our own leaders,” Gatto said, noting the district’s focus on competency-based systems and internal leadership pipelines.
Summer food and programs Gatto said the Colorado Department of Education approved the district’s summer food program. Breakfast service begins May 27 from 8 to 9 a.m. at Westminster High School and at the Westminster Swim and Fitness Center on 70 Sixth Avenue. Lunch in June and July will be available Monday through Thursday at Orchard Crossing Apartments, Alto Apartments, Zuni Apartments and Orchard Park Academy; Monday through Friday lunch will be available at Westminster City Park & Rec Building, Westminster Swim and Fitness, and Westminster High School. The district will distribute flyers and post schedules on its website.
Facilities planning and Fit Fi Gatto updated the board on the Forward Together Facilities Initiative (Fit Fi) committee, which includes staff, civic leaders and parent representatives. She said metro-area districts are grappling with declining enrollment and Fit Fi will guide long-term planning; the committee will soon announce public participation opportunities.
Additional notes Gatto also announced that two students — Jordy Medina Valverde and Aubrey Duskin — have been named Daniels Fund scholarship recipients. She congratulated staff at Hodgkin’s Leadership Academy for achieving Level 3 certification in the district’s high-reliability schools framework and noted continuing summer academic, athletic and creative-arts offerings.
Ending Gatto closed by encouraging families to look for information about summer programs and the Fit Fi public-engagement schedule; she said the district will continue to release details via its website and social media.
