Students honored for FBLA, HOSA, Rally-to-Tally and MathCounts achievements
Summary

The Marion County School Board opened its April 8 meeting with multiple student recognitions.
Kendall Reese, a senior at Vanguard High School and District 7 FBLA president, described Future Business Leaders of America as a multi-level national organization and said her experience as chapter president and district president built leadership and professional skills. Reese told the board that two students from Vanguard qualified to attend the national FBLA competition.
Edelisa Menes, a senior at Dunnellon High School and Dunnellon HOSA president, said HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) expanded her desire to work in health care; she placed third at the state leadership conference in medical assisting and qualified for HOSA’s international leadership conference.
Dr. Wanda Santos described a district-sponsored ESOL enrichment trip (Rally to Tally) that took 18 ESOL juniors and seniors to Tallahassee to research issues, meet public officials, and build legislative proposals; student speakers Carlos Santana and another student said the experience increased their confidence and civic knowledge.
MathCounts recognitions followed. Amber Gardner, representing the Florida Engineering Society and the local MathCounts program, said the competition drew eight schools and 69 students locally; Howard Middle School won the team competition and several individual winners were recognized. Board members publicly congratulated all students and organizers and posed for photos with the student groups.
The recognitions included invitations for students to stay after the meeting for photographs and acknowledgement of community partners who support the programs.
