The House Finance and Taxation Committee voted to recommend a due pass on Senate Bill 2093, a bill to provide limited income-tax relief to surviving spouses of law enforcement officers. Representative Olson moved the recommendation; Representative Vista seconded. The motion passed 12 yes, 1 no and 1 absent.
Committee chair Chairman Hedlund described the bill as “a little income tax relief for a couple of widowed law enforcement peace officers.” Representative Haggard said he supported the measure but expressed disappointment that it did not extend to a broader set of North Dakotans: “It’s good to see the senate getting to the spot of providing some income tax relief. It’s just a little disheartening that it's not at the level to benefit all North Dakotans, but I will be supportive of the bill.”
The clerk conducted a roll-call vote after brief discussion. Committee members recorded their votes by name; the clerk reported the final count as 12 yes, 1 no and 1 absent. Committee members discussed who would carry the bill to the floor; Representative Haggard indicated he would carry it forward.
The committee’s recommendation sends SB 2093 to the next legislative step for consideration on the House floor. No amendment language or guardrails beyond the bill text were adopted during the committee session.
