The Homewood City Public Safety Committee on April 7 approved its March 17 meeting minutes, voted to advance a proposed ordinance banning parking on the west side of Memy Foster Eighteenth Place and removed and then dropped a previously tabled item numbered 010121.
The minutes were approved after a motion to dispense with the reading. Councilor Wolverton moved to dispense the reading and approve the minutes; Councilor Grant seconded. The committee recorded the vote as 4 to 0 in favor.
Traffic department staffer Mr. Hambley described complaints about parking on the narrow block behind the Valley Hotel and Rodney Scott’s restaurant, saying, “The street’s 24 feet wide. And if you get 2 full sized vehicles, it gives you about a 10 foot, area to pass through.” Hambley told the committee that double‑sided parking makes it hard for larger service vehicles to travel the street.
Following Hambley’s description, a motion was made to prohibit parking on the west side of Memy Foster Eighteenth Place between 20 Eighth Avenue and 20 Seventh Avenue and to mark the west side (paint yellow) to prevent parking. Councilor Brent moved the measure; Councilor Wolverton seconded. The committee voted 4 to 0 to approve advancing the request (ayes have it 4 to 0).
Separately, members moved to take item 010121 off the table. The committee approved taking the item off the table by voice vote, recorded 4 to 0 in favor. Committee members then moved to drop item 010121; committee members said the item originated in a previous term and related to assessments with Kimberly Horn that the committee considered covered by other items. The motion to drop 010121 passed 4 to 0.
Public safety adjourned after the votes.
