The Germantown Village Board on Wednesday approved a settlement agreement with Meridian Germantown LLP (Walmart) resolving property tax assessment disputes for tax years 2023–2025.
Village attorney Jason Gehring summarized the agreement: Walmart will drop its 2022 lawsuit without payment; for tax year 2024 the settlement includes a payment of $2,694.65 that the village may charge back in part to other taxing jurisdictions; for 2025 the agreement says that if the assessor sets the taxable value at $17,000,500 or lower Walmart will not object, but if the assessment is higher Walmart may continue to challenge it.
Gehring recommended approval as a way to avoid continued litigation. Trustee discussion focused on litigation risk and the village’s exposure. "For 2025, it would only provide potential protection from having another lawsuit filed next year," Gehring said.
The board approved the agreement by roll call. The village noted that some of the 2024 payment can be billed back to overlapping taxing jurisdictions per standard practice.
