Multiple speakers tell Springfield SD 186 board they support Springfield High boys basketball program

Several community members and students used the public comment period on April 7 to express support for the Springfield High School boys basketball program and its coaching staff.

Libby Peach said she came to "show our support for, Springfield High basketball coach" and described the environment as very positive for her son, who has been in the program for 13 years. During her remarks she said the coach held players accountable for grades and attendance and created a supportive practice environment.

Logan Peach, who identified himself as a student, said without naming a coach that the program "has improved tremendously" and that participation in the program had helped him in "every aspect of my life from basketball to academics to relationships." Tanya Upshaw, a Springfield High alumna, reviewed the team’s recent records on the public record: she said the 2022–23 season finished 7–20 and that the most recent season finished 18–13, calling that a "30% improvement" and praising the players’ progress and mindset.

Katrina Porter, who said this was her first year with the program after transferring from another school, told the board she preferred the current program and said it encourages players to "work hard for their positions" and to earn playing time.

A board member interrupted one speaker to remind commenters to avoid naming individual staff or employees during public comment and suggested that specifics about individuals be submitted by email to the board office; the board indicated it had received letters on the topic. The transcript does not show the board taking any formal action in response to the comments during the meeting.

The remarks were made during the board’s public comment period and focused on program culture, team records and personal experiences rather than formal personnel matters recorded in the public meeting minutes.
