Superintendent outlines summer facility upgrades, new Spartan Field ribbon cutting and educator awards

Superintendent Gilmore reported on April 7 that Springfield Public School District 186 will proceed with multiple facility upgrades and campus projects this summer and announced several upcoming events for students and families.
Gilmore said the district will reschedule the Spartan Field ribbon cutting for April 8 at 4:30 p.m. after an earlier weather-related cancellation. He also reminded the public that kindergarten preview night is set for Tuesday, April 29 from 6 to 7 p.m. and that the student board representative application deadline has been extended.
On facilities, Gilmore outlined a list of summer and near-term projects: construction of a permanent restroom building at Lee Soccer Field to replace a single porta-potty; life-safety upgrades at Du Bois including a new gym floor, exterior decking and exterior doors; a roof replacement at McLernan Elementary; tile removal and abatement work at Sandburg Elementary as part of finishing a recent addition; a refinished gym floor at Franklin Middle School; a new outdoor “challenge course” for all middle schools; restroom and elevator work at Lawrence to restore programming in the historic building; and additional work at Springfield High School, including a new roof over the band and choir area and a skylight over a new common space. Gilmore said the Springfield High spaces are expected to be ready by January 2026.
Gilmore also recognized several educator and administrator finalists: educator finalists included Emily Anderson (Springfield Learning Academy), Liz House (Butler Elementary), Lisa Schweska (Blackhawk Elementary), Douglas Prep (name listed as organization), and Veronica Young (Early Learning Center). Administrator finalists included Bridal Filipiak (Wilcox Elementary), Erica Metz (Southeast High School), and Kenyatta Revelle (IELTS). Gilmore described visits to classrooms and surprise recognitions for the finalists.
