Council President Tyrus told the finance committee the Waterford Community Center now hosts multiple entities and will need a governing structure for policies, procedures and operational decisions. He proposed creating a special committee of community leaders, similar in purpose to the earlier school building committee, to provide recommendations to the council.
Assistant discussion noted prior practice: building committees have been used for the police station and earlier construction projects to provide more public oversight and additional review. Committee members said the idea has merit but asked for more time to consider composition, appointment authority and specific duties. "There's a lot that goes with the building that needs to be decided and thought of, and I believe a special committee of community leaders, would be the best option," Tyrus said.
No formal vote was taken to create the committee at this meeting. Committee members agreed to keep the item on the finance committee calendar to return with proposed membership, appointment procedures and a scope of work for review and possible referral to the full council.
