Kiwanis awards $7,000 in fair-display prizes; district announces essay contest scholarship winners

Fort Pierce Sunrise Kiwanis presented more than $7,000 in prize money to St. Lucie County schools Tuesday for their county fair displays and recognized scholarship winners from the annual Samuel Gaines essay contest.
Deb Mock and Gabby Simpson of Fort Pierce Sunrise Kiwanis led the awards presentation. First-place school winners in the fair-display competition received $1,000 each: River's Edge Elementary (elementary division), Palm Point K‑8 (K‑8 division) and St. Lucie West Centennial High School (high school division). Second-place winners received $500 and third-place winners $250; additional special awards included "out of the box," "wild card" and People's Choice prizes. The People's Choice award drew more than 7,000 votes; Lincoln Park Academy won that prize and the $1,000 award.
Sponsors named during the presentation included Garber Buick GMC, RK Davis Construction Corporation, CMTA Allegiance Company and the Fort Pierce Yacht Club, among others. Kiwanis representatives invited sponsors and winning school members forward for photos.
Separately, the district recognized winners of the Samuel Gaines essay contest, supported by scholarship sponsor Remnant Construction. Elementary winners were Arianna Tran (third place, Windmill Point Elementary), Zawanna Phillips (second, Mariposa Elementary) and June Candel (first, Samuel Gaines Academy). Middle school winners were Mason Ricksacker (third, Lincoln Park Academy), Catherine Jewels (second, Samuel Gaines Academy) and Sam Stoller (first, Palm Point). High school winners were Hannah Dorval (third, Lincoln Park Academy), Sydney Daniel (second, Lincoln Park Academy) and Andrew Robinson (first, Fort Pierce Central High School). Organizers said scholarship checks accompanied certificates and urged winners to collect them after the ceremony.
Kiwanis representatives and district staff encouraged families and community members to visit the Kiwanis building at the fair to view student displays.
