Commission approves first readings to update zoning map and rezone annexed properties

The City of Sweetwater Commission voted on first reading to revise its official zoning map to incorporate recently annexed lands and to amend zoning for several parcels that staff described as needing reclassification.
Mayor Diaz introduced the first ordinance as a map update to make city boundaries and land use designations clear. “This is the official, city of Sweetwater zoning map incorporating the annexed lands and providing for the city boundaries,” the mayor said. Staff said the accompanying ordinance changes update definitions and interim use districts and clarify density and University District overlay limits.
A second ordinance on first reading rezoned multiple folio parcels from Interim use and Heavy Industrial (I‑2) to other designations to support upcoming development. Staff said the measure aligns zoning with current and planned land uses for those parcels and provides findings of fact and severability.
Outcome: Both ordinances were moved, seconded and passed on first reading by roll call. Staff said the measures will advance to subsequent readings for final approval and codification.
