School board member proposes letter of support for Anchorage assembly’s safe-storage ordinance O2025-25

During the March 27 communications committee meeting, a board member asked that a letter of support for Anchorage Assembly ordinance O2025-25 — described in the meeting as safe-storage legislation — be added to the committee agenda and said they were drafting a letter for colleagues to sign.

The speaker said the letter is intended to show district support for safe firearm-storage measures and to complement district efforts such as the Be SMART campaign, distributing trigger locks and the Stop It anonymous reporting system. "I am writing a letter of support," the board member said, and offered to email a draft and relevant links to committee members.

Member Davis said she would "happily sign on" to the letter. Committee discussion did not record a formal vote or an official district position; staff and the speaker discussed timing for sign-ons with a possible window around the assembly’s work session in early April and a suggested end-of-month timeline for submitting names.

Committee members noted that while the district supports student and staff safety, how an assembly ordinance would ultimately look and be enforced is a matter for the assembly. One committee participant said the ordinance under discussion "brings back a conversation about kind of an accountability measure for when weapons end up on school" and that the form of any final ordinance is to be determined.

No formal board action was recorded during the communications committee meeting. Committee staff said they would circulate the proposed letter and supporting materials to board members for consideration and sign-on.
