Sumner proclaims April 13–19, 2025 Animal Care and Control Officers Week; shelter reopens with open house April 16

SUMNER, Wash. — The Sumner City Council recognized April 13–19, 2025 as Animal Care and Control Officers Week at its April 7 meeting and acknowledged Metro Animal Services staff for their work following a recent shelter renovation.
Chief Mariki introduced Lauren Whelan as the city’s new support services manager and asked her to read the proclamation. Whelan, who said she joined Sumner about two months ago and will oversee Metro Animal Services, police records and contracts and grants, read the proclamation and praised the animal-control team. “It is an honor for me today to appear in front of you to read this proclamation,” Whelan said.
The council recognized officers Catherine Baldwin and Casey Alban during the proclamation. Baldwin was noted as a recent graduate of the State Academy for Animal Control Officers who scored 100% on her graduation test. Officer Casey Alban said, “I’ve been with Metro for a little over 3 years now, and it’s such an honor to be with Metro, honestly.” Baldwin thanked the council and said she appreciated serving in the city.
Staff also announced that the recently renovated shelter has reopened to the public and that Metro Animal Services will host an open house on April 16 from 1 to 4 p.m.
