Representatives from the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCAT) visited the board meeting March 27 to recognize Lauren Oliver of Chapel Hill‑Carrboro City Schools as a finalist for the 2025 Burroughs Welcome Fund North Carolina Beginning Teacher of the Year award.
Tim Cosby, who identified himself as a volunteer and longtime organizer for the award, described NCAT’s selection process: regional centers choose finalists and the statewide process brings 27 finalists to a judging week (this year at UNC Greensboro) for leadership training and selection of the winner and runner‑ups. NCAT Deputy Executive Director Dr. Karen Sumner presented Oliver with a certificate; NCAT’s winners receive a $5,000 prize and a runner‑up $2,000.
Oliver spoke briefly to thank the district, named her principal and mentors, and said she was grateful for support in her first year of teaching. The district’s Empower development foundation also presented Oliver with a $250 check at the meeting.
Ending: NCAT’s regional recognition week and a public ceremony at UNC Greensboro are scheduled in late March; administrators congratulated Oliver and said the district will publicize her finalist status.
