The Kankakee City Council on April 7 approved a package of routine communications, event street closures, appointments, and several ordinances and reports in a single consent-style sequence.
The council combined items 8a–8h (community event and street-closure requests) and approved them with an amendment: the Kankakee Development Corporation’s three requests (items 8e, 8f and 8g) were modified to close only the 200 block of South Schuyler Avenue rather than both the 100 and 200 blocks. The combined motion passed with 11 ayes, 0 nays and 1 abstention on the combination and then passed on approval with a full “ayes” vote reported.
Other measures approved on the consent sequence included: - Multiple event street-closure permits for festivals, a farmers market and cruise-in events (dates and hours were read into the record). The clerk read each item, including dates (May–October 2025) and specific block closures. - Appointments to the Citizens Advisory Board for the seven wards (first- through seventh-ward appointees were read and approved by council consent, 12-0). - Ordinances placing surplus city property up for sale (surplus of a Western snow plow), approved on final reading following a motion to suspend the rules (12-0). - Handicap parking signs established at 717 North Wildwood Avenue and 555 North Industrial Avenue, each ordinance approved on final reading (12-0). - Approval of city bills and Environmental Services Utility bills after clerical adjustments; roll-call votes approving the report of officers were unanimous where recorded.
Council members discussed minor clarifications during the combined approval (for example, confirming the Kankakee Development Corporation only needed the 200 block for events) and recorded roll-call votes for each consent item. Where abstentions were reported, they were noted in the roll call.
The council also held committee reports during the meeting (building and code enforcement, ordinance committee and planning) and accepted the committee minutes and reports as presented.
