Kankakee United outlines events for National Youth Violence Prevention Week

Troy Lloyd, violence-prevention outreach coordinator for Kankakee United, told the public safety meeting on April 8 that the organization is planning a series of events during National Youth Violence Prevention Week, April 28–May 2.
Lloyd described a range of programming intended for middle- and high-school youth, including a police-stops career-center demonstration on April 28 and a skating trip to Tinley Park for junior high and high school students on May 1. "We're trying to be proactive ... a little over 70 days away from the summer," Lloyd said, noting the group aims to provide safe activities as warmer months approach.
Other planned activities include a community walk against violence to promote peace and an anti-bullying "Stand Tall" event at Gold Star Gym intended as a no-contact confidence-building exercise for youth. Lloyd said registration and permission forms are on Kankakee United's website and that transportation and program fees are covered for participants; parents must provide permission and pick children up after events.
Lloyd asked for community support and donations to sustain programming and listed ways for residents and organizations to get involved, including volunteering, attending events and making financial contributions.
