The project is a reinvestment in a 49-year-old neighborhood park, officials said. "Park upgrades, we're looking at 1,300,000 total for the playground, the tennis courts, the pickleball courts, the ********, the hammock rack, the slack line, all those amenities," Dan Medina, Sandy City parks and recreation director, said during a video tour of the site. Medina said $700,000 of the total came from a Salt Lake County Tourism, Recreation, Convention and Culture grant.
Jeremy Garcia, the project manager for the renovation, said the rebuilt courts will include "2 tennis courts on this side and 4 pickleball courts on this side. It's gonna have some brand new lighting coming in. It's LED," and described a new shade-covered playground area with multiple stations for different ages. City officials also said the playground surface will move from wood chips to poured-in-place surfacing with artificial turf and a spongy underlayer.
Sandy Mayor (name not specified) described the county grant as essential to making the project feasible: "I happen to sit on that committee and was very proud to vote in support of funding the, the assistance to complete the project to basically provide the matching funds to make this possible," the mayor said. Officials said the project has been years in planning and required the standard planning and review steps before construction.
City staff described several new, experimental features for the Sandy park system, including a dedicated hammock station composed of basic poles where visitors can bring and hang their own hammocks, and a small slack-line area. Officials said benches with shaded canopies and an expanded 5-foot sidewalk that will loop the playground are part of the design, along with a pad for concrete cornhole.
No formal council action or ordinance was recorded during the recorded site tour. Officials provided cost and funding details and described the construction timeline; they did not provide a specific contract number, final bid amounts, or a precise calendar date for opening beyond the target month of June.
The renovation is being presented as part of Sandy City's ongoing investment in parks and open space amid population growth and denser neighborhoods, officials said. The city encouraged residents to visit Bicentennial Park once work is complete.
