WAKULLA COUNTY, Fla. — County Comptroller Greg James updated the board on Wakulla County's response to a state task-force letter arising from Governor—xecutive Order 25-44 and commissioners voted to authorize a letter expressing that the county "embrace[s]" a state review and will assist as needed.
James said the governor's executive order created a state-level task force and that Wakulla County received a follow-up letter asking whether the county met any triggering conditions called out in Florida Statute Section 218.503. "We do not meet any of those conditions and have not," James said, and he told commissioners the county's independent annual audit includes the auditor's opinion on that statute; he said he sent the task force a copy of the county audit.
James reviewed the themes in the executive order, including the governor's direction to identify inefficiency and minimize taxpayer burden, and noted the county's current fiscal metrics and reserves. "As your auditor and comptroller, I oftentimes look at spending as a 3 legged stool," James said, listing legal authority, public purpose and budget line-item availability as the criteria he uses when reviewing expenditures.
Commissioner comments endorsed transparency. One commissioner moved that the board invite the state team to provide an audit or review; another commissioner suggested sending a letter and referenced similar actions by Bay and Jefferson counties. The motion to send a letter inviting the state team passed, 5-0.
James and county leaders said the county already employs an internal auditor and an external annual audit and that staff would cooperate with any requested review. The board asked staff to draft a simple letter saying the county is ready to assist and to bring a proposed letter or resolution back if the board wanted to formalize it.
Ending: The board approved sending a letter expressing willingness to be reviewed by the state team; staff will draft the correspondence and report back.
