Commissioners and members of the public raised ethics, lobbying‑registration and donation‑disclosure questions about the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) during a March 26 committee discussion that the League’s vice chair attended.
Commissioner Joe Suarez presented records and public‑records requests alleging the League’s executive director failed to register as a lobbyist for many appearances before city review boards and that the League received contributions from developers shortly before the League’s public positions shifted on development matters. A League representative, Nina Weberworth (vice chair), told the committee the executive director had resigned effective March 31; board leaders said the organization values preservation and welcomes the opportunity to work on policies for donations and disclosure.
Several commissioners urged collaboration: Chairman Fernandez and others thanked MDPL for historic preservation work but said transparency and clear rules about donations and advocacy are important. The committee agreed MDPL should return when new leadership is installed; the League and commissioners discussed returning to the committee in approximately three months to outline organizational governance and disclosure changes.
