An elected official at the meeting said state legislation under consideration would eliminate the business personal property tax and could reduce Vigo County revenue by about $3 million a year over the next 10 years. He urged department heads and elected officials to contact legislators and said he had discussed concerns with Senator Goode.
The same official described recent storm damage in New Goshen caused by an EF-1 tornado and encouraged donations and visits to residents affected by the storm. He said Fayette Elementary was spared, but many residents — some without insurance — face significant needs.
The official praised county response teams and outside partners, saying highway, building inspections, the health department and Duke Energy responded quickly. He said Duke Energy restored power to most customers quickly, with remaining outages tied to extensive structural damage such as ripped-off meter boxes.
Ending: The commissioner asked the community to be patient with recovery work and to support affected residents through donations or volunteer assistance.
