A State Department spokesperson said the United States is aware of reports that Ukrainian forces captured two Chinese nationals fighting on behalf of Russia and characterized China as a major enabler of Russia’s war effort.
The spokesperson said China provides “nearly 80% of the dual use items Russia needs to sustain the war,” and added that continued cooperation between China and Russia “will only further contribute to global instability and make The United States and other countries less safe, less secure, and less prosperous.”
Reporters asked whether such reports would change U.S. support for Ukraine; the spokesperson reiterated calls for urgency in diplomatic efforts to determine whether Russia is serious about peace talks and said the administration would judge Russia’s intent in the coming weeks.
The department did not provide independent confirmation of identity or circumstances of individuals reported captured in Ukraine and described the reports as awareness-level reporting from Ukrainian sources.
