Middlesex supervisors approve supplemental roofing and paving contracts and a $16,552 electrical change order for sheriff’s office renovation

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to award two supplemental construction contracts for the sheriff’s office renovation and approved a $16,552 change order to correct an electrical code issue.
County project manager Chip England told the board two bidders responded to an invitation for bids for roof repairs and gutter replacement; the low responsive bidder’s line items were $58,004.25 for metal roof repairs and $19,005.26 for gutter replacement. Staff recommended awarding both line items to DeShazo and Sons, and the board approved that award during a roll-call vote.
The board also approved a $91,825 contract with Finley Asphalt & Paving to perform pavement overlays in two areas at the sheriff’s site (the secure area behind fencing and a public roadway area). England said staff recommended proceeding with the two paving elements and deferring a separate concrete pad to seek a more economical approach later. The board approved the award and authorized staff to proceed.
Separately, the board approved a $16,552 change order to the original renovation contract after the electrical engineer discovered the original design did not meet code for the power pump installation. County staff said they will seek reimbursement from the project design parties but requested authorization to pay the amount now so it would not delay the contractor’s planned substantial completion date in early May.
All three items passed on unanimous roll-call votes. Supervisors who voted “yes” were Mr. Crittendon, Mr. Jesse, Mr. Williams, Mr. Bill Harris and Mr. Don Harris.
County staff said the supplemental roofing/gutter work and the paving are scheduled to begin immediately after substantial completion, currently projected for May 2, and that the concrete pad will be reconsidered later to reduce cost. Staff also said the contractor intends to asphalt to the new fencing edges without removing fence panels, to avoid additional cost.
The board heard praise for Sheriff Bushey’s on-site oversight of the renovation project during the discussion; the praise was editorially reported as expressions by multiple supervisors and staff, not as formal actions.
The board instructed staff to proceed with the awarded contracts and with the code-related change order while staff pursues reimbursement from the design parties.
