McAllen ISD board adopts April proclamations for autism awareness, military children and GT week

The McAllen Independent School District Board of Trustees adopted three proclamations at its April 22, 2025 meeting declaring April 2025 as Autism Awareness Month and the Month of the Military Child, and designating April 7–11, 2025 as Gifted and Talented Awareness Week.
Trustee Lucia Thompson read the autism proclamation describing the United Nations’ designation of World Autism Awareness Day and urging early diagnosis and intervention. Trustee Erica De La Garza Lopez read the proclamation recognizing military-connected students and noting the district’s observance of "Purple Up" on April 15. Trustee Lucia Regalado read the proclamation for Gifted and Talented Awareness Week, calling attention to identification and support of students who would benefit from GT services.
Administration identified the items as submitted by Dr. Rosalba de Hoyos, associate superintendent for instructional services, and Mr. Mark May, director of marketing and communications, introduced student participants for the proclamations. The board approved the set of proclamations earlier in the meeting on a motion by Trustee Eliseta and a second by Trustee De La Garza Lopez; the chair announced the motion carried 4–0.
Each proclamation included standard language urging the community to support programming for the respective groups and to celebrate the contributions of students in those categories during the designated dates.
