Commissioners approve application for PCCD indigent defense grant amid minor funding-number discrepancy

The Lawrence County Board of Commissioners approved Resolution 71 on Tuesday authorizing county officials to apply for an additional indigent defense grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) to supplement funds previously awarded for 2024–2025.
Attorney Keith, representing the public defender’s office at the meeting, told commissioners the Commonwealth had allocated additional funds and that the county could apply for the amount identified in PCCD paperwork. “PCCD got some more money, and every county in the Commonwealth is allocated a certain amount that they can again apply for to go for indigent defense. [The county] is eligible for $96,619,” Attorney Keith said during his presentation.
Commissioner Kennedy caught a small numerical inconsistency between the amount Attorney Keith mentioned and the figure printed on the resolution paperwork. “The only thing I have, Keith, is our resolution says $96,596 dollars,” Kennedy said; the board and counsel agreed to use the figure shown on PCCD’s signature page. Attorney Keith asked the commissioners to sign the application so staff could finalize and submit it; commissioners voted unanimously to approve Resolution 71.
Attorney Keith said any funds granted would be used in accordance with PCCD rules and that the county would return to the board to discuss specific uses once awarded. The resolution lets staff complete and sign the application; staff noted there is time to collect signatures before the program deadline.
