Board approves design contract to upgrade Hurricane Creek lift station for future growth

The Board of Public Works on April 7 approved a design contract to upgrade the Hurricane Creek lift station, a wastewater pump station east of Route 965 that the city says is more than 20 years old.

City staff said the work will add pumping capacity, modernize controls and provide bypass pumping to allow maintenance without service interruptions. “This scope is the upgraded lift station and will be able to meet that future demand,” a city staff member said during the meeting.

The lift station currently operates with three pumps; the design will accommodate six pumps and include adding a fourth pump in the near term, the staff member said. Other project elements described in the briefing include replacing the master control valve, upgrading the wet well mixing system, installing a bypass pumping system and motorized crane, improving lighting and access, and extending power and control system improvements.

Board members asked how the planned upgrades would interface with a proposed interceptor on the city’s east side. A staff member said interceptors in the same corridor will connect to the Hurricane Creek lift station.

Staff said the study and design work reflect projected development in the Marshville Road corridor. The board voted, without recorded dissent, to approve the design contract and move the item to the next stage of procurement.

Project implementation, including construction funding and a timetable, were not specified during the presentation. City staff said design coordination would continue with wastewater operations and finance teams, and that future meetings will present cost and schedule details for board approval.
