The fire department presented plans to address dormitory layout, fitness and storage deficiencies at its station. Staff said current dormitory arrangements do not meet contemporary standards for firefighters and that COVID emphasized the need for greater separation and improved air handling.
The proposed work would include an east‑side addition to expand dorm space, a larger fitness room and added storage. Staff estimated that if work were done in the near term the package — addition, full roof replacement and related renovations — could be on the order of $2.0–2.5 million. A 2026 estimate used a $2.5 million figure to incorporate anticipated price increases.
City staff said the plan would be subject to normal capital prioritization and bidding processes and that more detailed designs and cost estimates would be supplied to council as the department refines its scope.
