The City of Newberry Planning & Zoning Board on April 7 agreed to continue consideration of the special-use permit application for the Northfleet Industrial Park to a date and time certain: May 5 at 6 p.m.
Planning staff read a written request from the applicant into the record. The letter — signed by Jerry Deidenbach of NV5 on behalf of the Norfleet family — asked the board to defer to May 5 so the project team could address “misconceptions and misinformation” that had circulated among staff, residents and on social media.
The letter clarified that the proposed concrete batch plant is a facility for mixing sand, gravel, dry cement and water into ready-mix trucks rather than a cement-manufacturing operation that would extract or blast raw materials. It also said the proposed truss plant would operate inside a site-specific building designed to contain dust and noise and that both facilities are planned to be located on a rail line to reduce truck traffic. The applicant pledged that required local, state and federal permits would be obtained and copies filed with the City of Newberry and appropriate agencies.
Planning staff read the applicant’s request into the record and the board voted to continue the item to May 5 at 6 p.m. Board member Burchard moved the continuance; board member Parker seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
The continuance will give the applicant additional time to provide technical materials and to respond to community questions before the board considers the special-use permit application.
