Planning and Zoning Commission OKs 1-year extension for New Territory detention preliminary plat

The City of Sugar Land Planning and Zoning Commission on April 8 approved a one-year extension for the preliminary plat for New Territory Detention Expansion Number 1, a 12-acre site in the city's extraterritorial jurisdiction.

Jessica Rodriguez, a city staff member, told the commission the project was originally approved in May 2023 and that a one-year extension had already been granted in April 2024. Rodriguez said the plat relates to work by Fort Bend County and “Lid Number 7” expanding its detention system and that final plat submittal has been delayed by construction of Sartoriusia Road and the need to abandon an existing right of way — the abandonment must be approved by city council before the final plat can be accepted.

Rodriguez recommended approval of the extension so the project can continue while outstanding coordination and paperwork are completed. A commissioner noted that the reserve table on the preliminary plat contained incorrect square-foot conversions for Reserve A, Reserve B and Reserve C; commissioners and staff agreed that conversion errors would have to be corrected on the final plat before it is accepted.

After brief discussion the commission voted to authorize the additional one-year preliminary plat extension. The commission also approved the minutes of its March 27 meeting. No members of the public signed up to speak during the public-comment portion of the agenda. The meeting adjourned after the actions were taken.

The commission's next meeting is scheduled for April 24; staff said a final development plan extension will be on that agenda and commissioners may need to arrive as early as 5 p.m.
