Select Board member Peter Bakke told the board on April 7 that electrical equipment at the Plains commons is in an unsafe condition and recommended disconnecting two power services pending replacement under an upgraded system.
Bakke said Unitil had indicated there would be no charge for meter disconnection if the town proceeds with replacement and that the town could avoid a police-detail charge if the fire or police department assists with on-site traffic control. Bakke asked the board for authority to disconnect the services immediately for public-safety reasons.
Bakke moved to authorize disconnection; Ellie Alessio seconded. The board voted unanimously to authorize removal of the two services until they are replaced as part of a broader Plains electrical upgrade. The motion passed with all members present voting yes.
Town staff said some panels are locked and that access keys are missing; staff will coordinate with Unitil and the fire chief to carry out the disconnections in a way that minimizes disruption while addressing safety concerns. The board also directed staff to continue planning for new electrical infrastructure at the Plains as part of the site-improvement project.
