Seminole County votes 4–1 to end community water fluoridation after presentation and public hearing

Seminole County commissioners voted 4–1 on April 9 to end community water fluoridation for the county’s utilities system after a presentation from the utilities director and an extended public hearing that drew dozens of speakers for and against the practice.

Seminole County Utilities Director Johnny Edwards briefed the board on the county’s role, the history of community water fluoridation and operational considerations. ‘‘We treat the water to comply with state and federal drinking water standards,’’ Edwards said, noting the county owns five water treatment plants and does not itself set health advisory levels. He summarized recent developments: a 2023 National Toxicology Program review, a federal court ruling in California finding that fluoride poses a risk to human health, and the Florida Department of Health’s November guidance recommending against community water fluoridation.

The board then heard about an hour of public comment. Speakers included medical and public‑health professionals, dentists and county residents who expressed sharply divided views.
